Rakau Choir and the Christchurch Schools Music Festival 2017

We LOVE to sing in Rakau, and this year the teachers decided that one sure way to enjoy our singing more than anything else, is to have a go at singing in a huge choir. So all of the students in Rakau are in our choir, which will be a part of the Christchurch Schools Music Festival. This is held over three days in October at the Horncastle Arena, with about 50 schools participating each night.

Many parents may recall singing in a schools festival such as the Christchurch one, learning a range of songs usually around a theme, and then experiencing the joy of singing in a group of over 1200.  We hope that our Year 5-8 students will have a lot of fun learning the songs and then performing them on our night which will be on Thursday 26th October.

In the lead up to the festival, our choir will go to two rehearsals - one at the end of Term 3 at Avonhead School, and the other will be at the Horncastle Arena on the day of our performance. We will book a bus for this and include the cost in our activity fee in Terms 3 and 4.

Tickets will be available online from Ticketek, and we will let families know when this happens. The website for the festival http://musicfestival.school.nz/  shows exactly where Ashley School will be positioned for our performance night so you can book tickets with the appropriate view. There is also a lot of other information regarding the festival on the website, so take the time to have a glance at it.

Look for further updates as we get into learning and practising the songs. The theme this year is ‘Weather’, which means there are some cool songs including ‘Summertime’ from Porgy and Bess, ‘Raindrops keep fallin on my head’, ‘Blue Skies’, ‘Weather with you’ and Chris and Lance’s absolute favourite - ‘Africa’ by Toto. What does that have to do with the weather you might ask?
